A Young Man Sits and Plays His Waiting Game
Or, the Odd Choices That Precede a Shower and Breakfast
I've spent my whole creative career trying not to be a cliché, but today, hey, I am. I'm thinking: Should I eat breakfast? Shower? Move the archive boxes into storage while I am officially unclean? Or, finish making the outline for a podcast, work on my novel, or write my friends on Substack? I am, in true-artist fashion, all over the proverbial map this morning. Maybe it's because I've been up since 4AM. A criminal time to rise if there ever was one. I gave it a good forty-five minute try. Closing my eyes tighter didn't help. A flop to the left, back to the right. No good fruit of slumber to be had. Once risen, I did have a good conversation with the Maker about matters of mutual concern and worked on the podcast outline for a couple of hours.
It's okay though, right? I put my time in empire-building, leaking blood and hubris. I can take a nap at 10:49AM if I want. It's all good.
So good in fact, that I'm now remembering why I started this note. James Taylor. One of my primary teenage songwriting heroes. I covered one of his most memorable songs during the Summer of 2020. It was a cover challenge initiated by Brent Bourgeois that I took on and passed on to my friend singer-songwriter Louise Goffin (her mom, Carole King played piano on JT's version back in 1971). Ah, the song in question? The ever-soulful "Long Ago and Far Away" from his album, Mud Slide Slim and the Blue Horizon.
It being Video Tuesday in the CP Tinyverse, "Long Ago and Far Away" was up next in the video queue. It’s uploaded everywhere, but presented to you my dear reader here for your convenience and care.
Have a great rest of the week and I'll see you again at the TGIF Foto Friday.
